Need expert assistance - Spanish Wines
Ver mensaje de 1946061mI will be travelling to Spain next month, and want to buy some wines to bring back. However, I know nothing about Spanish Wines. Can you recommend - by name - some you think shouldn’t be missed? Looking in the $30/bottle price range. Thanks so much!

Ver mensaje de 1946061mWelcome to the forum! (by the way, what an alfanumerical nick! :-)
Where do you can from and where are you going in Spain? I imagine you will like to buy wines you can’t found in your country.
In the $30/bottle price range there are many wines to choose. Do you know anything about Rioja, Jerez, Ribera or Priorat wines, for instance?
Re: Need expert assistance - Spanish Wines
Ver mensaje de Juan SuchI am going to Southern Spain. I don’t know ANYTHING about Spanish wines... Yes, I want to buy wines that are not available here in the U.S. I would also like to be able to impress my new boyfriend who is the food & bev director of a wonderful hotel.
Re: Need expert assistance - Spanish Wines
Ver mensaje de 1946061mDo you like red, white or fortified wines? Tell us something about the wines you like in the US and we can help you with Spanish wines in that style.
In Southern Spain (Andalusia?) there are few specialised shops and it’s a very sunny region. It is very important to know where to buy the wines to avoid bad keeping conditions.

Ver mensaje de Juan SuchYes, andalucia - specifically, Malaga... I am a big fan of shiraz and syrah.
Recommedations on Spanish Red Wines
Ver mensaje de 1946061mOk, then we can start with reds ;-)
There are some good Syrah Spanish wines (for instance Enrique Mendoza Shiraz 2001 from DO Alicante has a wonderful QPR: https://www.verema.com/en/tastingnotes/wine.asp?wine=4196) but I think you must buy what is the most characteristic of Spanish wines: Good Tempranillos from Rioja, Ribera or Toro or some Priorats (but now the dollar is weak and they are not cheap). Mencia wines from Bierzo are very interesting too. So, a quick list just to start:
- Roda II (Rioja)
- San Román (Toro)
- Mauro (Ribera)
- Dominio de Tares (Bierzo)
- Venus (Montsant)
- Maduresa 2001 (very nice labelling; from DO Valencia)
There are Tasting Notes if you search in the TN section: https://www.verema.com/en/tastingnotes/
And you must try finos, manzanillas and other typical wines from Jerez...
Re: Recommedations on Spanish Red Wines
Ver mensaje de Juan SuchGood selections, Juan, although all but Maduresa are available in the US.
Maybe something like 2001 Anima Negra, which may or not get to the US eventually but I’m pretty sure is not here yet.
