    White oaked wines....

Mmmm, sorry but I’m a bit inquisitive these days ... so I’d like to kwnow your opinion about white Spanish oaked wines.... No doubt the oaked chardonnays are very popular nowadays but I’ve also tried some interesting wines made of sauvignon blanc, verdejo or white granache with a touch of oak... What do you think about them???

    Cheers!!!

Too hard to generalize. I’m not a fan of heavily oaked chardonnays, although I do not think of tis as a common problem in Spain. Obviously oaked whites are standard in Rioja. For younger wines I can certainly think of good examples where some oak creates more interest. Barbara Forés El Quinta comes to mind. I think the wine is barrel–fermented in new French Allier oak barrels for about fifteen days and then aged five months on the lees. In the finished product, which features honeyed fruit and minerals, the oak componant reminds me of the spice nutmeg.

I’ve found generally that Spanish oaked Chards are slightly more subtle than the new world average. I still don’t like them much tho. I’d much rather drink Viña Sol than Gran Viña Sol.

Oaked Sauvignon is horrible! I never tried a Spanish one, but have tried Californian ones at €30 or so that are irredeemably vile.

Absolutely, and I would rather drink 2003 Viña Sol then most Chards at several times the price.

I woudl agree with Walt. Oak is the fashion, but already here in the UK there are a lot of people who are fed up with these wines. I would say the export potential of oaked Spanish Chard is now next to zero.
