"Tasting of the Decade"
Ver mensaje de WaltZalenskiJuan,
I very much enjoyed your article, particularly since I recently participated in a similar event involving ’98 Priorats.

Re: I hope not!
Ver mensaje de WaltZalenski... and that in the 5 years left of the Decade you get to have tasting like this one or better ... but this was impresive indeed! ... I will have to go and get some Erasmus: I never bought any!

Re: "Tasting of the Decade"
Ver mensaje de WaltZalenskiVery interesting Walt, something that has attracted my attention is the scoring system as we used the same in Falset…. However you must take into account that 95 was a very peculiar year and that winemakers were (at that time) still trying to choose the right way for Priorat wines, so they are –al least this is what I think- most interested in “power” than in “elegance” so that, 95 are far more rougher wines than 98…
Re: "Tasting of the Decade"
Ver mensaje de Paco HigónI have joined a Spanish wine tasting group in New York that only tastes blind and scores in the same manner that you did. So I will soon get accustomed to this method. This method takes more discipline. Generally when you taste 10 or more wines blind you do not try to make fine distinctions between, for example, the 8th and 9th placed wines. With this system, you must.
Re: "Tasting of the Decade"
Ver mensaje de WaltZalenskiWalt, sorry for not reading and answering your post before. I have been really missing in this and the Spanish forum in the last weeks. Too much work (and the bad mood by the advent of my 40 years old anniversary, which incidentally is today :-) are the explanation for this ausence.
The Falset tasting was very interesting (but I enjoyed more the 94s of the previous year, as stated in the article). The 98s horizontal is much more interesting than the 95s for the reasons pointed by Paco. I believe 98 and 2000 and the really first great vintages in Priorat. Time (and the availability of some bottles :-) will show if that statement is true.
Re: "Tasting of the Decade"
Ver mensaje de Juan SuchHappy Birthday! Do not worry - there is life after 40.
Interesting that 1965 was perhaps the worst vintage of the century in Bordeaux. I trust you have aged far more gracefully than those wines.
Perhaps you can find a ’65 Unico to enjoy.
Passing of decades
Ver mensaje de WaltZalenskiThanks, Walt. Yesterday I started the celebrations with an interesting Pur Sang 1999, which is not finished yet. I will reserve my comments about this somewhat cult white wine until that moment.
For today, some Champagne (Billecart-Salmon rosé) and perhaps Bosconia Gran Reserva 1954 or 1964 which will quite SURE have evolved better than me! :-)
I hope to meet you in the Osborne cellar next September. Only that Oloroso Solera BC 200 justifies the trip from US...
Re: Happy Birthday!
Ver mensaje de Juan Such... Enjoy it!!!! lots!!! ... believe me, in another 15 years or so you’d feel the happiest goose turning ’only’ 40 ;))). Beautiful age! ... the wines you are planning to have sound great. Have a very nice and fun celebration ;)) (but now is not longer a secret on the other Verema side :))
