Just to inform you, all the English-speaking readers of this site, that the registered users of Verema.com have voted the following awards in three categories for the year 2003:

    - Spanish Cellar of the Year: Dominio de Tares (DO Bierzo). A new cellar (founded in 2000) making wines with the autoctonous Mencía and Godello grapes with wonderful quality-price ratio. You can read more about them as they are our Winery of the Month: https://www.verema.com/en/wineries/month/

    - Best Spanish Wine of the Year: Cirsion 2001 (DOC Rioja) and Clos Mogador 2000 (DOC Priorat) ex-aequo

    - Spanish Wine Personality of the year: Telmo Rodríguez (owner and driving winemaker at Cía. de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez. They produce wine in Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Cigales, Rueda, Toro, Navarra, Somontano, Madrid, Alicante, Málaga and even in the Portuguese Douro)

The awards ceremony will be and the end of the dinner on February 28, as the final act of the III Verema.com Encounter. For more information about this event you can read (in Spanish) in: https://www.verema.com/opinamos/articulos/articulo.asp?articulo=131

What do you think about these four winners?

Hope it’s not too late to respond to this...

...I guess the only ";problem"; is that nobody will read it!

The interesting thing is that Cirsion, by virtue of it’s very short time on barrel, can have a 2001 competing with 2000 from everyone else. This can lead to rather misleading results.

    Alex, welcome to this forum.

What do you mean with ";nobody will read it!";? Nobody from the English-speaking world? We have just finished the III Verema Encounter the last week-end. I hope some of the Verema forumites present at Valencia will post something about it in this forum.

Regarding Cirsion, it’s true that has only 8 months in barrel but needs a lot of air right now (double decanting recommended). Anyway, the election of the ";Wine of the year"; by the Verema registered users is not confined only to new deliveries. People vote the wine that has impressed them more in 2003.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the welcome!

By ";noone would read it"; I was assuming that responding to an old thread would result in the post falling off the bottom of the active list. However, I have since discovered ";list of recent messages"; and assume that may be a common access mechanism ;-)

Turning to the issue of ";wine that impressed most in 2003";, would it not be fair to say that Cirsion is at an unfair advantage, as 2001 vintages of other super-premium wines wouldn’t yet be released? Or maybe they have been?

Alex, yes, the ";list of recent messages"; is another way to see the posts and certainly helps with old threads.

I don’t think Cirsion is at an unfair advantage because 2001 vintages of other super-premium wines wouldn’t yet be released. I think Spanish wines are released on a much wider vintage spectrum than in France. For instance, you can found as a new offers from a 1981 white Tondonia or a 1989 Vega Sicilia Unico until the last 2003 maceración carbonica red.
