Too good to drink when young?
Too good to drink when young?
Ver mensaje de Juan SuchLooking at a free sample of a WS School Sample Class about Wine & Aging (that Google Ads on the right side...) I read the following pop-up text:
The persistent myth is that age-worthy wines aren’t good when they’re young. Like people, these wines can be enjoyable at every age; they offer different experiences at each stage in their lives.
";It’s not true when people say that a red wine won’t age well if it is too good to drink when young.";
Jean Delmas, winemaker at Haut-Brion, Pessac, Bordeaux
Well, just food for thought. I remember two apparent opposite views about this question from two renowned Spanish winemakers. Mariano Garcia (ex Vega Sicilia, Mauro, San Román) says great wines cannot be too perfect at delivery. Agustín Santolaya (Roda) says he looks for wines that drink well over their whole life cycle and that are approachable when young.
Perhaps the best approach is to observe the evolution in bottle as proposed by Anthony Barton, owner, Chateau Léoville-Barton, Paulliac:
";It’s a very interesting process to follow the maturation of a wine. People often ask me when they should drink the wine. I jokingly tell them that they have the choice between lunch and dinner.
But seriously, I think that nobody should lay down the law that this wine must be drunk in a specific year. It’s got a drinking span of maybe 20 years; it’s going to be good when it’s 5 or 6 years old and when it’s 25 years old.";
Just food for thought...

Ver mensaje de Juan SuchWell, if Mariano García anda Agustín Santolaya have opposite answers to that question..., I think I prefer not to say nothing about it.
May be I prefer wines A. Santolaya is talking about, but I’m not sure if this is possible. I’m just thinking with the last ";virtual"; tasting of Torresilo 2001: the wine is now enjoyable, but it will be better within 2-3 years.
