Yes, that’s right. Most seem to have a version of Capçanes’ Mas Collet, with different labels and slightly different blends. L’Ermita is quite common too. And there’s Marqués de Griñon’s Durius, also in supermarkets.

Within the last 2-months or so I have had wines not only from the DOs you mentioned but also from Bierzo, Carinena, Mallorca, Penedes, Jerez, Montsant, Pla del Bages, Rueda, Somontano and Toro. At least those are the ones I can remember.

They were all bought at specialty wine stores. In most places in the US, buying wine at a supermarket really is not feasible. At best, basic plonk is available in supermarkets. Indeed, as a resident of Washington DC, I often cannot find locally, even in specialty stores, many of the Spanish wine that I buy. I have to have it shipped other places, usually from New York or California.

Why do you ask, Paco? It seems you have some theory brewing.

    Paco,

There is a really good selection of wines from around the world in the UK. The selection available in Spain of non Spanish wine is really poor in comparison, though changing.
There are some excellent independent merchants in the Uk with interesting Spanish lists.
The supermarkets here (the dominant force in wine retailing)have mainly the traditional areas but would also, for instance, stock Jumilla and Albariño with some Montsant. Being the supermarkets though volume would be important so no boutique wineries.
The wine drinker is well served in the UK.
    There are supermarkets
High street chains (wine shops found in most towns/cities)
Independent Merchants (usually one outlet and internet sales)

still it’s nice to go to Spain and find an emerging winery before it arrives over here.
I hope this is of use to you.

Yep, after chatting with some friends we reached to the conclusion that Spanish consumers -in general- are far more narrow minded with non classical wine regions than foreigners. Spanish consumers have some irresistible devotion to Rioja and Ribera del Duero wines (and probably also towards Priorat wines) but we are reluctant to give a chance to less popular wine regions.

And the question about sellers .... just to compare with the Spanish situation.

    Cheers....
