Monte Real crianza 2001 for the next virtual tasting
Monte Real crianza 2001 for the next virtual tasting
Ver mensaje de Juan SuchNext Tuesday 29, at 20:30h. local time in peninsular Spain (GMT +1) we will have our next virtual tasting. We are going to try a classic wine from ’Bodegas Riojanas S.A.’ winery with a new bottle format and presentation. We will see if the new merchadising implies a differente style of wine.
The action will be in a special forum in the Spanish side: https://www.verema.com/comunidad/catasvirtuales/
Regarding the wines from this winery, I liked Viña Albina reserva 97 (see TN in Spanish: https://www.verema.com/comunidad/vinoscatados/vino.asp?vino=2755), a very interesting wine (floral, seductive and feminine) from a poor vintage. A good recomendation made to me by MCamblor. The reserva 98 was not so seductive (https://www.verema.com/en/tastingnotes/wine.asp?wine=5320). Perhaps needs more time in bottle...
Have you tried the wines from this traditional winery (founded in 1890) in recent times?
Re: Monte Real crianza 2001 for the next virtual tasting
Ver mensaje de Juan SuchThanks to the kindness of Bodegas Riojanas and the hard work of the Verema organizers, I have a bottle of the Monte Real Crianza (not distributed in NYC, but they were nice enough to send me a sample directly from Rioja) and will participate in the ";Virtual Tasting"; during my lunchtime.
Riojanas has been, for a long, long time, one of the value powerhouses in Rioja. Their wines, from Puerta Vieja Crianza to the Viña Albina and Monte Real Reservas and Gran Reservas, have always been quite impressive in terms of QPR.
I’ve had the great fortune of trying Monte Real back to the ’50s. The ’62 sticks in my memory as an amazing wine, full of power and grace. With Viña Albina I haven’t been so fortunate, having only had wines as far as the late 1960s. Both labels, at the Reserva and Gran Reserva levels, are of wines that benefit greatly with bottle-age.
The ’97 Albina Reserva: Glad you liked it. Did you try the ’97 Monte Real Reserva? Another winner from that vintage you call ";poor."; The ’98s of both wines are more concentrated and somewhat backward. They need time, almost like every good ’98 I know (remember my comments on the ’98 Muga Selección Especial?";)

’98s from Rioja
Ver mensaje de MCamblorNO, I haven’t tried the ’97 Monte Real Reserva. I couldn’t bought it because suddenly the ’98 vintage replaced the previous one. THuRStoN has two TNs with different apreciations of the wine: https://www.verema.com/comunidad/vinoscatados/vino.asp?vino=6024
I haven’t enjoyed any ’98 from Rioja, at least in the last two years. I don’t remember your comments on the ’98 Muga Selección Especial. What did you say?
Re: ’98s from Rioja
Ver mensaje de Juan SuchMy comments about that wine are in the controversial thread about the Albariño that smelled faintly of urine. Sorry, no time to seek them out and rehash them here.
