    Poll: Cava out of Spain.

    Hi all,
for all you who’s living out of Spain. What Cavas can you find in your winestores? Do you buy (and drink, of course ;) it usually or just every other year? Which are your prefered ones?
It’s just for curiosity sake ;)

    Cheers,

    Jose

Endless numbers of cheapies, usually bottled for the supermarket in question and without a name as such on the label. Usually cost less than £5 and are often on offer for even less. Freixenet + Codorniu are pretty common, also Marqués de Monistrol. It’s by a long way the UK’s biggest selling sparkling wine, but there isn’t really anything I’d bother to drink.

Generally speaking, only the basic NV Freixenet and Codorniu cava have been commonly available in the US, with perhaps relatively rare sightings of Segura Viudas at the high end of what is available. Recently, cavas from U Mes u Fan Tres (1 + 1 = 3) have become available and, although very inexpensive, seem to me to represent a fairly substantial step up in quality. Some inexpensive Gramona products are also new to the market and, although I have not been overly impressed with the one or two I have tried, they have been getting good reviews. About a year ago a store in New York miraculously had 8 or 10 bottles of a Agustí Torelló Mata reserva, and I bought them all. I’ve never seen or heard of more being available.

It seems that nobody wants to import the best and more expensive cavas. I wish this were not the case, but I can understand the marketing problem. Cava does not have its own unique identity here; it is still mostly understood as cheap-Spanish-champagne-substitute. (For many years I recall Freixenet and Codorniu used the word ";champagne"; rather than ";cava"; on their labels.) I also seems like the sparkling wine market is relatively small here. If most people only drink sparkling wine two or three times a year, it does not present many opportunities to experiment beyond champagne.

Cava with Crown or Screw cap

    Ver mensaje de jose

Any Cava bodegas experimenting with crown or screw cap? After all Cava spends all but the last few minutes of its time in the bodega under screw cap.

I don’t know the exact meaning of ’crown’

In the ";sealing bottles"; semantic field, can you explain me, please?

Nevertheless and regarding screw cap, I don’t know if anybody is making any experiment, but I think that the screwcaps can’t hand with the pressure inside any cava bottle. Don’t you think?

    Cheers,

    Jose

    P.S. BTW, welcome! ;)

First of all, welcome to our community Warren. About the question of Jose: ";Crown"; refers to what we call ";tapón de corona";... the one used by champagne and cava producers before to put the cork .... I mean during the second fermentation (that happens... as you know.... in the bottle). I’ve not seen this kind of caps in Spanish wines (except during cava production...)... however screwcaps are common in Finos and Manzanillas.... and also in PX wines...

    Cheers
