Yesterday at the Hotel Majestic (Barcelona) and organised by the reputable negotiant Quim Vila, we had the opportunity of trying Petalos del Bierzo 2003, Villa de Corullón 2001, San Martin 2002, Fontelas 2002, Moncerbal 2002, Las Lamas 2002 and La Faraona 2002.

After a break, we had a paired dinner in the Restaurant Drolma and then we tried Corullon 2001, San Martín 2001, Moncerbal 2001, Las Lamas 2001 and an impressive magnum (really scarce, indeed) of La Faraona 2001.

The wines were presented by Alvaro Palacios and Ricardo Perez Palacios…. I’ll try to put some comments later on…

Wow! A magnum of ’01 LaFaraona and you cracked it open? I have a rare magum of the’01 Paixar, but I do not plan to open it for years.

I tried all the ’01s and the Petalos but I am eager to hear a more detailed report of your experience.

    Frankly, I don’t think so....

IMHO, nowadays, these are some of the best Spanish wines…. So my ratings reflect my point of view … ;-))

I prefer 2001 vintage.... however, I must recognise that as wines from 2001 have some ";more bottle"; is possible that this has influenced my opinion ...

About 2001 in Bierzo: This was the rainiest winter in 50 years, spring was also fresh ang rained a lot. After this summer was dry & shining. So the crop was bigger than expected, but ripe and balanced.

About 2002 in Bierzo: As in the rest of Spain this was the coldest winter in 30 years. Also summer was colder than usual with August nigths so cold. As rains were moderated, grapes riped very well so that wines were a little bit thicker than other years but fragrant and sexy.

2001 Vintage was qualified by the DO as Excellent and 2002 as Very Good...

Arffff!!!! I’ll continue tomorrow with the rest of the TN’s.

Interesting. Since you awarded 98 points to the 2002 Moncerbal and LaFaraona and you think the 2001s are better, I suppose that I have a 50% chance of guessing your ratings for the 2001s - 99 or 100.

But I’m still curious about the details, and about your thoughts on Petalos ’03.
