Spanish Syrah
Spanish Syrah
Ver mensaje de WaltZalenskiOne of my tasting groups recently conducted a double-blind Spanish Syrah tasting. We tasted 12 wines, mostly 2003s but with some exceptions and, of course, some ringers. Most of the Spanish wines, typically of moderate price, ranked better than the ’03 Pax Obsidian and the 2003 Rene Rostaing (Cote Rotie) ’la Landonne’, which Parker scored 96 and 97 points, respectively. For value, Finca La Estacada Reserva de Familia 2003 was one of the best. Finca Sandoval 2003, a bit more expensive, also did well. But the truly incredible wine of the night was Finca Garbet 2001 - clearly a world-class Syrah.
Re: Spanish Syrah
Ver mensaje de WaltZalenskiCome on... tell us about the other Spanish syrah.... what about Mendoza’s syrah... and Griñon syrah??? Is interesting to see that they are competitive with these nice French syrah....

Re: Spanish Syrah
Ver mensaje de Paco HigónBesides the three I mentioned, the other Spanish wines that showed well were Monogos Pago Vicario 2003 and Pago Del Alma 2002 (La Mancha). On the other hand, Casa Castillo Valtosca 2002 (Jumilla), Finca Son Bordils 2003 (Mallorca) and Los Planos 2003 (Cariñena) did not do so well. Additional ringers (other than the two previously mentioned) were Montes Folly 2001 (Chile) and Greenock Creek Apricot Block 2002 (Oz).
Re: Spanish Syrah
Ver mensaje de WaltZalenskiErm, the right name is Monagós... a really interesting wine from Pago del Vicario... 80% Syrah 20% & Garnacha tinta.
Sorry for my ignorance but what does “Oz” means? I suppose that is an abbreviation for a USA producing area???
Re: Spanish Syrah
Ver mensaje de Paco HigónSorry, Paco. ";Oz"; is wine-board English for Australia.
