Prieto Picudo, Maturana Tinta, Molinera del Bailen

I’m a student at WSET (Wine& Spirit Education Trust) and I’m writing a thesis about minor indiginous Spanish grape varieties and their (possible) commercial potential. Because there are so many grape varieties in Spain, I picked three: Prieto Picudo (Léon), Maturana Tinta (Rioja) and Molinera del Bailen (Jaén). If anyone has information, or an opinion a a wine drinker, about these grapes and wines made from them, price, a tasting note, etc. etc. I would be very gratefull.

unfortunately I don’t have experience drinking wines made with kind of grapes. Nonetheless in the spanish side, under the ’Vinos Catados’ section you can find a bigger database of tasted wines and there you can find some examples made with them.

Ver mensaje de 17396I just came form a wine tasting hosted by Jesus Martinez Bujanda (the son) from Conde del Valdemar. We tasted "Inspiracion Coleccion Varietales 2005" which was 100% Maturana.
Sight: very dark ruby with purple edge
Smell: Green (bell) pepper, coffee, dark berries
Taste: Medium acid, Full body, Medium tannins, dark berry and cherry flavors, chocolate
Overall wine was quite good but not as complex as one might hope.
