CONVENTO SAN FRANCISCO 2003
What on earth was this? I have had this wine a few times before and enjoyed it.
It's a typical modern Ribera but usually has a nice leather note to it that makes it interesting for me. However this bottle was like drinking a puree of oak barrel. Aromas of vanilla and oak completely dominated. I really struggled with this.
Tried over two days and it did not improve.
Really poor (but other bottles have been better)
SASTRE CRIANZA 2003
There are notes of toasty oak on the nose but also some nice fruit.
Again this is a modern style but there is a better balance between the elements. Yes there is vanilla and oak and ripe fruit but with each taste a different ingredient seems to dominate. On the nose there is a spirit/alcohol note that leads me to believe it's an idea to drink up while
black fruits and some glycerin are to the fore.
I really like the Sastre range but believe these wines would be even better if they were toned down a little.
Gasp...
Ver mensaje de RayQYou're becoming tainted by the anti-over-oaked-spoofulated-wines-league! ;))))))))))
I won't be the Devils's Advocate... but, maybe a vintage issue? I see both of them are the extremely hot '03 vintage... :-?
Cheers,
Jose
Re: Gasp...
Ver mensaje de joseJoking aside I DO believe my tastes are changing.
Or at the very least would like to see more alternatives to the 'modern' style.
Don't think it's entirely vintage.
Over the summer I had a 2003 Convento de SF which was quite interesting.
But this one was just completely one dimensional...oak, full stop.
The Sastre is much better but still not for you.
I have posted elsewhere about CONTINO.
I have had a very interesting 95 Contino over the summer.
And a very nice (modern-ish) 2004 but here in London I've had a 2001 that was MUCH more modern than either. Very oaky and alcoholic. I like (and want to like) this winery but I was really confused by this 01. I thought that it might have been more restrained than it was.
Re: Gasp...
Ver mensaje de RayQWell, this part of changing and evolution in the kind of wines we like is a nice part of our walking as winelovers. I think none of use like (only) the kind of wines we began to drink years ago, isn't it?
It's said that Contino makes modern wines with traditional feeling. Unfortunately I don't have background with this wines :-((((( Shame on me!
Cheers,
Jose
Re: Gasp...
Ver mensaje de RayQThe 95 was the reserva? I had that one a couple of times and I really like it, it is ageing nicely. I recently tried the 2004 and... it's ok, but wouldn't buy that one more. It wasn't the oak what was annoying me, but the fruit, that I found a bit overripe and starting to show some rains character. And it really surprised me, because a year ago it was nice.
Never tried the 01 reserva, just the Olivo, which was very, very nice (in its modern style).
Re: Gasp...
Ver mensaje de OlafYes Olaf,
all wines were the Reservas.
I know there is a Gran Reserva in some vintages (mainly in magnum?)
Is there a crianza also? I wasn't aware of that.
The 95 was mainly secondary characteristics.
I imagine you might quite like it.
Re: Gasp...
Ver mensaje de RayQThere was a crianza also, but not anymore. My doubt was between the reserva and the Olivo.
Hahaha...
Ver mensaje de joseYes indeed... another member of the anti-oak league ;-)
