From a recent "library release" by the bodega, we’re lucky enough to get to try the ’70, ’78, ’81, ’82 and ’85 PEs. Notes on all as soon as I drink them. Prices are quite reasonable all over, ranging from $55 to $80 per, depending on th retailer one lands. Anyway, the wine... At first, I was ready to declare this D.O.A., judging by theiffy odor of dead leaves and vanillin that came from the initial glass I poured myself. But with about twenty minutes of air, a lovely transformation... Aromas of smoke, curry powder (believe it or not, this was the most distinct, obvious spiciness I’ve smelled in a while...), red licorice, clay, dark chocolate, dried cherries and raspberries. Light and elegant on the palate, with vibrant acidity. It seems a bit faded at midpalate, but that may just be this bottle. Medium lngth, but yet, a complex aftertaste of tobacco, caramel, cranberry and toasted nuts with a clear note of citrusy acidity holding things together.
