We often hear or read about legendary wines and look forward to the day that we can, perhaps, try one of them. I try to keep an open mind and not raise my expectations, for fear of disappointment. This was supposed to be one of those legendary wines, from a mythical vintage, and hear I was, glass in hand, about to try it. Deep amber gold, clearly the deepest coloured of the evening, with a bright olive green rim. The explosive nose revealed liquid barley sugar, crème caramel and cloves. There was more and it was complex. A seamless injection of liquid and very ripe concentrated peaches and apricots leading to waves of sweetness. Dry and fresh on the finish, which was incredibly long. A truly awe-inspiring wine and pretty much perfectly balanced, I can still see this wine living for another few decades.
