Although this will be hard to believe, I bought a mixed case of 1995 German Rieslings back in 1997. I had wanted to dip my wine toes into the vast sea of Riesling and this was my first purchase. Cellared since then, this was my first bottle. Light yellow and 8% alcohol. On the nose I found hints of petrol, a touch of botrytis and green plums. With some air, I sensed something pleasant and Phil hit the nail on the head when he said “apple crumble”. It developed further over about 20 minutes showing pear and lychee nuances. A surprisingly dry finish, this started to implode in the glass after 30 minutes. A nice wine, fully mature but I was disappointed as I was expecting more sweetness and acidity. Also, it surprised me that this wine was falling apart before it had reached its ninth birthday. I thought Rieslings of this calibre were supposed to age longer than this?
